Wheels for the Elvis Impersonato

By Terry Jackson

This beauty is a small but wonderful piece of American racing history. It’s a 1959 Hank Henry sprint car that has a 255-cubic-inch Offenhauser engine. The seller says it was previously owned by Don Vesco and Bill Manley and has been fully restored and has competed in vintage races.

While the listing doesn’t say what the race history of the car was in its day, these cars represent a rough-and-tumble period in U.S. racing. When this car was new, it was the type of racer driven by the guys who went on to compete at the Indianapolis 500. Guys life AJ Foyt and Mario Andretti cut their teeth driving sprint cars.

The seller was asking $30,000 for this example, which he says was in great shape with “typical race patina.’’
